An object's durability, its future repairability, and the ability to replace a single part rather than the whole are decided at the design stage, not once the object is finished. An assembly designed to be dismantled easily, for instance, rarely costs more than one permanently glued together.

Making a part exactly when it's needed, rather than producing large quantities in advance that sometimes go unused, naturally reduces waste of material and resources. This is one of the core ideas behind RDF's anti-obsolescence approach.
